The unknown reading habit

So, here's what I learnt tonight. 

面白い話を聞いたよ。

Japanese books are written in vertical. Why ? 

何で、日本語の本は縦書きか。知ってる？

"Japanese nod while they read (positive) 

and we shake their head (negative)  when they read."

「日本人はうなずきながら本を読んで、私たちは首を横に振りながら読むのよ。」

WHAT...?

「今、何て。。。？」

yeah that's what a girl next to me told me when I was reading book at the bar tonight. 

そう、私が今夜、バーで本を読んでいた時に、隣の女の子が教えてくれたこと。

I've never even questioned about it ! Have you !? 

そんなの考えたこともなかったよ！ある！？

Interesting... 

面白い。。。

Talking about vertical and horizontal, I always have difficulty finding books here. 

でも、縦書き＆横書きについて言えば、こっちの本屋さんって本を探すの難しい。

Because I'm so used to read spine of a book straight, but her, you have to put your head on one side and read it.  You know what I mean... 

なぜって、日本語の背表紙はそのまま読めるけれど、洋書って首を傾げないと読めない。言いたいことわかる。。。？

Anyways, that was very shocking reality of our unknown habit. 

とにかく、未知の事実に驚いた夜だった。
